Adder Tongue (Intro)

(Nepal defines itself as a secular country today, but the constitution still protects Sanatan Dharma (read: Hinduism), the religion of the dominant community, while ignoring those practiced by the rest of the citizens. In a state of transition, the old battles the young, and the status quo refuses to budge. The powerful use the guise of religion and nationalism to put a halt to progression.)
The old consumes the young
With twisted words from an adder tongue

N.D.I.F.

(Those in power in Nepal, and the ones who benefit directly from them, fear change and use the excuse of nationalism to suppress the rights of the indigenous, the minorities, and women.)
A privileged majority
Imagines it’s suppressed
They fear the minority
And what they’ll take
Watch them try to justify suppression
Their poison?
Ultra nationalism
I’m neck deep in filth
I wade through this shit
I’m neck deep in filth
Forced to wade through this shit

Built On Wrongs
01:31

(The average Nepali despises politicians and yet ends up believing their lies, especially when presented with a nationalist twist. These same people look back upon the days of the monarchy with fondness, (choosing to stay) ignorant of the system of an era that was even more discriminatory than it is now)
You espouse the same beliefs
As the masters that you despise
Latch on to every word
Believe all their lies
So what makes you any different?
A nation built on wrongs
A history shunned by all
Ignorance normalized
Bigotry legitimized
You curse your leaders
But fall for every lie
You wonder what went wrong
After the fall of the bloody crown
And ignore the little fact
That things were never right
Still believe the fabrications of your long dead kings
Self-serving tyrants who brought nothing but ruin

Diet Of Ignorance
02:46
|

(In Nepal, there is a divide between the people of the hills and the plains - the Madhesis, who have historically been discriminated against by the state. Derogatory terms referring to Madhesis are used casually, without a single thought about the consequences of such hateful words. Children pick them up from their parents and the cycle of bigotry continues)
Conditioned at birth to hate
Like our parents before us
We’ve all been raised on a steady diet of ignorance
I can touch the divide
Unstated but not unseen
Words that prick
Will lead to bigger wounds
Guilty of staying silent
Complicit in keeping shut
Ashamed of all that I’ve seen
We’re recidivists one and all
This city is a great raw wound of emptiness, void of feeling
And I can’t hide this bottomless pit that is my contempt

Praise The Tyrant
03:11
|
|
||
(In the 1950s, the then king adopted the idea of a Nepali identity - one religion, one language, one dress. This ethnic nationalism definitely brought pride to certain sections of the privileged public, but it destroyed and continues to wreck the identities of the powerless - those who do not follow the state religion, nor speak the same language, nor traditionally wear the national costume. What he decreed then is used as a yardstick to measure who and what is “Nepali” - anyone not conforming to these standards is immediately a “foreigner”.)
They venerate the dead despot
They lionize the oppressor
Singing the praises of the tyrant
Extolling his delusions
Peddlers of lies
Rather stay divided than be forced to be one
You won’t understand it
Clouded by nationalism
There will be no flag waving
It’s not a world I want to live in
With scum like you
In the guise of unity
In the guise of uniformity
In the guise of homogeneity
You destroyed everything

(The hypocrisy of the Hindu right, majorly in India and, to a lesser extent, in Nepal. The concern for cows on the part of the Hindu extremists should never be mistaken for animal rights. It’s nothing but a tool to suppress minorities.)
Where the fuck are they?
They who screamed about rising up
They who yelled those platitudes
Chests beaten blue, clenched fists raised
Mouth full of threats against the enemy
Eyes shut, ears closed
To the silent innocents that they profess to deify
Hollow words devised in hollow minds
Where’s your religion now?
Your gods are all dying
Scavenging in a putrid pile, your mothers
Left to rot, left to die
Tethered, tied up, chained, the unused
Starved to death
Vultures, they wait
Holy mother, corrupt child
